BIBLICAL EXPECTATIONS OF CHURCH MEMBERSHIP

VISION SUNDAY JANUARY 28, 2024

When a person decides to become a member of any entity, they begin with understanding what is required to obtain membership as well as what is required to maintain membership.

1. THE LORD’S EXPECTATIONS – Matthew 16:13-18 

The word “church” means “the called-out ones.” It’s the first time the word is used in scripture, and it is used by our Lord to describe the ones who will recognize that He is the Son of the Living God, saved them and require them to follow Him. Following Him means to “come on out” of some things.

a) SIN - 1 Peter 2:9c

b) SOCIETY - 2 Corinthians 6:17-18; Acts 2:39-40 

c) SERVE - John 12:26

d) SING – Ephesians 4:19 

2. THE LEADERSHIP’S EXPECTATIONS – Come on out

a) ATTEND AS ONE – Hebrews 10:24-25; Acts 2:44

b) PRAY AS ONE - Acts 4:31

c) WORK AS ONE - Ephesians 4:16 

d) WITNESS AS ONE – Acts 2:46-47

 e) FOLLOW AS ONE - Hebrews 13:17 

3. THE LAYPEOPLE’S EXPECTATION – Come on out

a) ENLIGHTEN US - Acts 28:23; Acts 18:26

b) EQUIP US – Ephesians 4:11-12 

c) EXHORT US - 2 Timothy 4:2

d) ENCOURAGE US - 1 Thessalonians 3:2; Acts 15:32
