WHEN I GIVE MY TITHES

Leviticus 27:30-34

Tithing and giving to God began with Abraham & Jacob.

Genesis 14:18-20 – Abraham. A tenth was given in time of wealth.

Genesis 28:20-22 – Jacob. A tenth was given in time of poverty and distress.

 

God is concerned about 4 principles when we give our tithes.

 

1. THE AMOUNT IN GIVING – vs. 30a , 32a

It’s 10%. The word tithe in the Hebrew means a “tenth part.” Whatever came up out of the ground and/or moved on top of the ground, 10% was to be given. 

 

2. THE ATTITUDE IN GIVING – vs. 30c 31-33

a) Attitude that remembers that it all belongs to the Lord – OWNERSHIP

We are giving to the Lord what belongs to Him. Deuteronomy 8:17-18; 

1 Chronicles 29:11-14; Haggai 2:8

 

b) Attitude that remembers it is sanctified (set apart for Him) – STEWARDSHIP

The tithe was to be the most holy part of one’s money because it was set aside for the Lord. Therefore it was not to be tampered with! Israel knew that to forsake giving to God was to invite a curse upon themselves and their land. Malachi 3:7-11; 

Haggai 1:2-11

 

c) Attitude that remembers God deserves the best – INTEGRITY VS. SELFISHNESS

The element of selfishness can affect our giving. God wants our hearts to be pure when it comes to giving. We ask is it a good or bad TIME to give. 

 

3. THE AIM IN GIVING – Numbers 18:21, 24-28; Deuteronomy 14:28-29

a) To sustain the spiritual work of the temple and Priests – God appointed the Levites from the tribe of Levi to oversee the temple activities. Your tithing helps sustain the spiritual work of this ministry and the staff it takes to run it. 

 

b) To sustain those less fortunate  - Deuteronomy 14:28-29

There were those in Israel who could not provide for themselves. God made provisions for them as well. Romans 15:26

 

4. THE ACCOUNTABILITY IN GIVING - v. 34

It all comes down to, OBEDIENCE to the commandment of God. To not give of your money to God and claim to be a believer is nothing short of sin. 

God notices what we give, how we give and with what attitude we give it in.
